It’s only week 3 of 52, and we have heard layoff news from Google, Amazon, Paytm, Instagram, Duolingo, and Discord, to name a few.
A conversation with my friend, Anupam Dighe, triggered a thought, and I went into a rabbit hole trying to find answers.
Here are my personal opinions on what may be the real reasons for these layoffs.
1️⃣ Short-Termism
The pursuit of quarterly gains is steering companies to focus on immediate financial performance.
It may provide short-term investor satisfaction but raises serious concerns about long-term business health.
2️⃣ Guidance Unpredictability
In the fast-moving business landscape, unpredictability has become the only constant. The ability of leaders to make long-term projections has increasingly compromised.
This volatility is not temporary. Companies are finding themselves in a reactive mode, making rapid adjustments, often at the cost of their workforce.
3️⃣ Ambition & The Rise of AI
Companies are taking more risks with ambitious projects to stay ahead of the curve. With risks comes uncertainty; if these do not work, an entire division may be shut down.
Add AI to this mix, which is creating and dissolving job roles.
Companies are at a crucial junction – adapting to AI and potentially downsizing or ignoring it and risk falling behind.
These are not just layoffs. They are indicators of more profound shifts in business patterns.
The question remains – are we building organizations that are agile yet resilient, innovative yet sustainable? It is time to rethink how we define and pursue growth.
What do you think? I would like to hear a counter to this opinion.
