User Feedback: More Than Just Surveys

Vallabh Chitnis | Product Management | User Feedback: More Than Just Surveys

Break free from traditional surveys! Discover three unconventional methods for gathering user feedback that I read about recently.

1️⃣ Digital Ethnography
By immersing yourself in users’ digital environments, you can gain deep insights into their behaviours, preferences, and challenges.

How to Implement: Observe user interactions in online communities, forums, and social media. Look for patterns, common issues, and unarticulated needs. Tools like netnography can help analyze these digital footprints.

2️⃣ Guerilla Testing in Natural Environments
Real-world context can reveal issues and opportunities that controlled environments miss.

How to Implement: Take your product to where your users naturally gather—coffee shops, public spaces, or events. Conduct spontaneous usability tests and observe how they interact with your product in their natural settings. This approach is informal and often yields candid, unfiltered feedback.

3️⃣ Customer Journey Mapping Workshops
Understanding the entire customer journey can highlight pain points and moments of delight that standard surveys overlook.

How to Implement: Invite a diverse group of users to a workshop. Use storytelling and mapping techniques to visualize their journey with your product, from awareness to post-purchase. Encourage participants to share their experiences, emotions, and expectations at each stage. This collaborative method can uncover holistic insights.
