Saturday Musings: L.E.A.D. Framework for Natural Leadership

With close to two decades of experience across startups and M.N.C.s, I have learned a lot from diverse people, each with their unique leadership styles.

I have observed that “Leadership” is everywhere; Titles are optional, but a leader’s leadership essence is mandatory.

There are specific common themes across leadership styles that I have attempted to fit in the L.E.A.D framework.

L – Listen

  • What? Hear receptively and absorb.
  • Why? True awareness bridges gaps and creates trust.
  • How? Remember to be fully present with your undivided attention in every communication.
  • When? Specifically during feedback, team meetings, and brainstorming sessions.

E – Empathize

  • What? Feeling with others, sharing their emotional space.
  • Why? It paves the way for respect and genuine team connection.
  • How? Walk in their shoes, ensuring each voice is understood.
  • When? In times of conflict, during team collaborations or one-on-ones.

A – Act

  • What? Proactive execution.
  • Why? The initiative establishes you as a dependable go-getter.
  • How? Spot the gaps, and make your move.
  • When? Whenever there’s a challenge, an untapped opportunity, or for improvement areas.

D – Develop

  • What? Continuous self-growth and evolution.
  • Why? Stagnancy is not in a leader’s dictionary.
  • How? Be it through workshops, books, or daily reflections with a commitment to self-improvement.
  • When? Every single day. Make it a habit.

Bonus: The L.E.A.D. 2×2 Matrix

Here is a simple 2×2 matrix, a handy way to help you apply the L.E.A.D. framework in your leadership journey.
