Marty Cagan, product management thought leader, states, “Product management is not about the solution. It’s about understanding the problem.”
Too often, product managers get entangled in the solutions—building features ‘how’ to build the features.
But the real skill of a Product Manager is determining the ‘what’ and the ‘why’.
What problem are we trying to solve, and why does it matter?
Example Tesla. They did not jump to creating electric cars. They started with the problem of unsustainable transportation and pollution. The electric car was a solution to a well-understood problem.
According to a Pragmatic Institute survey, 42% of product managers spend most of their time firefighting. Imagine the innovation that could happen by redirecting their focus to understanding problems.
Let us try to shift our focus from simply framing solutions to deeply understanding the problems.
The best solutions often come from the best-understood problems.
